ABOUT NCD
Navigators Community Development (NPC) was founded in 2006 to support low-income individuals in our community. Initially project-based, the organisation focused on addressing food scarcity, fostering community building, and supporting children and youth in need.
Recent studies reveal that South Africa has one of the highest youth unemployment rates globally, with a staggering 45.5% unemployment rate among individuals aged 15-34, compared to the national average of 32.9% in the first quarter of 2024. For young black South Africans, this challenge is exacerbated by systemic inequalities rooted in our apartheid past. Education, however, offers a pathway to overcoming these barriers.
Statistics show that reducing youth unemployment significantly requires providing young people with post-school education. Education is not just about individual empowerment but also about collective growth. Investing in education means investing in the future of South Africa.
NCD's mission is to up-skill, educate, and create opportunities for previously disadvantaged youth through programs focused on skill development. Our goal is to promote self-employment, further education, and entrepreneurship among these young individuals. Each skilled young person becomes a potential contributor to the economy. Education helps close gaps in income, opportunity, and access to resources.
Over the past six years, NCD has expanded its reach and successfully trained (SETA accredited) approximately 60 unemployed youth aged 17-25, with 98 percent now employed.
NCD has acquired a 200-year-old building in Simons Town (Royal Alfred) to convert into an Upliftment Centre for low-income youth in our community. Restoration and renovation are underway, funded by private loans covering the building's purchase, additional costs, and initial restoration. The roof is secure, floors have been restored with new timber, but plumbing and electrical supplies still need to be acquired. The team is focused on securing funds and material donations to complete the restoration by the end of 2024.
